Rovinj is a stunning coastal city located on the western coast of the Istrian peninsula in Croatia. This picturesque settlement, once an island, is now connected to the mainland and is one of the most popular tourist resorts on the Adriatic coast, known for its scenic coastline and pristine forests.

According to the 2021 census, the population was 12,968, with an estimated 13,914 residents in 2024. The official languages are Croatian and Italian, and the town is also known by its Italian name, Rovigno.

The name ＂Rovinj＂ has deep historical roots. It is believed to have originated from the Etruscan word ＂Ruginium,＂ meaning 'hilltop,' which is an apt description for the town built on a hill. During Roman times it was known as Castrum Rubini, and it was later called Ruigno and Ruvigno before evolving into its modern Croatian name.

Rovinj's history is spanning millennia. The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with evidence of life from the Bronze and Iron Ages. The Roman settlement of Castrum Rubini was established in the 5th century, and the town's strategic location on an island provided safety from invaders.

From 1283 to 1797, Rovinj was one of the most important towns in Istria under the rule of the Republic of Venice. During this period, the town was heavily fortified with stone walls and town gates, remnants of which can still be seen today, including Balbi's Arch and a late-Renaissance clock tower.

After the fall of Venice, Rovinj became part of the Austrian Empire in 1797. It later belonged to the Kingdom of Italy from 1918 to 1947. After World War II, it was ceded to Yugoslavia as part of Croatia and renamed Rovinj.

The most iconic landmark is the Church of St. Euphemia, located at the highest point of the old town. It dominates the skyline and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the town and the Adriatic Sea. Climbing its bell tower, which involves 200 steps, is a rewarding experience that provides a spectacular perspective over the red-tiled roofs and blue water.

The Old Town is a maze of narrow, cobbled alleys, colorful houses, art galleries, and craft shops. The entrance to this historic core is through Balbi's Arch, a beautifully carved stone gateway. From there, you can explore the main street, Grisia, which is lined with picturesque houses and restaurants.

A unique aspect of Rovinj's heritage is the Batana Ecomuseum, which is included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Register for Good Safeguarding Practices. It is dedicated to the preservation of the ＂batana,＂ a traditional wooden boat, and offers tourists the chance to experience Rovinj's maritime heritage through boat tours and exhibitions.

Rovinj Heritage Museum, established in 1954, located in a beautiful baroque palace dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. It showcases a remarkable collection of masterpieces from the 15th to the 19th centuries, wooden sculptures, and modern Croatian art, alongside exhibits on the city's rich history and maritime traditions.

For nature lovers, Zlatni Rt (Golden Cape) Forest Park is a peninsula covered in trees and home to several small beaches and hiking trails. It is a perfect spot for swimming, picnics, and enjoying the natural landscape, located just 20 minutes on foot from the town centre.

Rovinj is a fantastic destination for food lovers, offering a blend of Mediterranean, Italian, and Balkan cuisines. Istrian specialties like truffle pasta, truffle oil, fresh seafood, and Istrian ham (pršut) are a must-try. These are best paired with local wines like Malvazija.

Rovinj enjoys a comfortable Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, pleasant winters. The warmest months are July and August, with average daily highs around 83-85°F (28-29°C). For general outdoor activities, the best time to visit is from mid-May to early October, while the hot-weather season peaks from late June to late August.
