Dubovac Castle stands proudly on a hill above the city of Karlovac in western Croatia, overlooking the emerald flow of the Kupa River. This elevated fortress offers commanding views not only of the entire star-shaped city below but also of the distant borders of three sovereign nations.

The origins of Dubovac Castle trace back to the 13th century, when it was constructed as a defensive outpost against invading Tatar armies. Archaeological findings on the hill reveal that the site was inhabited as early as 3500 BC, long before the medieval fortress was erected. This long history makes the castle one of the oldest and most important monuments in the entire Karlovac region.

The castle's name, Dubovac, comes directly from the Croatian word ＂dub＂, which refers to the oak tree. When the fortress was first built, the surrounding hillsides were blanketed in dense oak forests, and the settlement took its name from this natural feature. Today, the name is also used for a modern city district in the Karlovac periphery, preserving this link to the area's wooded past.

A crucial turning point in the castle's construction occurred in the year 1511, when its owner, Bernardin Frankopan, wrote in a letter that Dubovac had been transformed from a mostly wooden structure into a stone edifice. This upgrade marked the castle's evolution into a permanent and much more formidable fortress. The Frankopan family, one of the most influential noble dynasties in Croatian history, played a key role in shaping the castle's medieval character.

The current shape of Dubovac Castle was established during a late 15th-century fortification campaign along the border region. The design features a square guard tower that rises two floors above three round, two-floor towers, with wings containing defensive, storage, and residential rooms. This mix of square and circular towers reflects a blend of Gothic and Renaissance architectural influences.

Throughout its long history, the castle was owned by several prominent Croatian noble families, including the Sudar, Blagaj, Frankopan, and Zrinski dynasties. In 1442, Dubovac was leased to Prince and Ban Stjepan Frankopanski before becoming the permanent property of the Princes of Krk-Frankopan. The castle remained in Frankopan hands until the mid-16th century, when it passed to the Zrinski family. Later, the War Council of the Croatian military border purchased the estate.

In the 19th century, Count Laval Nugent, an Austrian general of Irish descent, undertook a major restoration of Dubovac Castle in the Romantic style. This renovation gave the fortress much of the appearance that visitors see today, blending historical authenticity with the romantic ideals of the era. Nugent's work helped preserve the castle for future generations and transformed it into a site of cultural and historical interest.

Dubovac Castle has been owned by the municipality and open to the public since 1896, making it one of the earliest preserved monuments in Croatia to be deliberately maintained for collective memory. It stands as the most prominent landmark in the Karlovac cultural and historical landscape, visible from almost anywhere in the city. Its distinctive silhouette on the hilltop has become a symbol of Karlovac's rich heritage.

The castle's high square tower offers a vista that stretches not only across nearly the entire city of Karlovac but also over the territories of three sovereign states and two historical empires. From this lookout, visitors can see the Kupa River winding through the valley and, on clear days, the distant borders with Slovenia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. This viewpoint is particularly spectacular during sunset, making it a favourite spot for photographers and sightseers.

Today, Dubovac Castle functions primarily as a museum and cultural venue, operated by the Karlovac City Museums.
