The famous monastery Tvrdos, located about five kilometers from Trebinje, dates back to the Middle Ages and it is believed that it was founded by the Czar, Saint Constantine, and his mother Saint Helen. The Tvrdos monastery is renowned for its wine production and its wine cellars, with possibility to wine tasting. Last reviewed: 30 January 2022 Tvrdoš (Tvrdos) descriptionTvrdos Monastery is a 15th century Serbian Orthodox monastery near the city of Trebinje (Republika Srpska) in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and is one the oldest cultural-historical monuments in Republic of Srpska. The 4th century foundations of the first Roman church on the site are still visible. The monastery, which is dedicated to the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, was established with a cathedral constructed around 1508 and painted with murals. From 1596, the center of anti-Ottoman activity in Herzegovina was the Tvrdoš Monastery in Trebinje. However, the monastery was destroyed by the Venetian Empire in 1694. Due to the destruction of the monastery many priceless spiritual and precious cultural items from Tvrdos were transferred to Monastery Savina near Herceg Novi (Montenegro). The spirit of this monastery continued not only in Savina, but also in the nearby Duzi Monastery (about 8 km). The current building was constructed in 1924. A great awakening and intense renovation of the monastery was experienced since 1955 which still continues until the present day. The Tvrdos monastery is also famous for the fact that Vasilije of Ostrog was tonsured in it, becoming a priest. After that, he spent some time serving as a parson of Popovo polje. That is the reason he is called as "Saint of Ostrog and Tvrdos". Although the monastery was rebuilt in 1924, it kept its original stone cellar from the 16th century. The old cellar is underneath the monastery where wines age in big 100 year old Monastic oak barrels. In 2006 a new wine cellar was built near the river with the latest winemaking technology, including a gravity flow facility to transport grapes and wine using the multilevel cellars. Additionally, a third cellar was constructed in 2012 for aging wine in small barrels made out of different types of oak. Today, the monastery is renowned for its wine production, wine cellars with possibiluty of wine tasting, and is a popular tourist attraction. The top quality of Tvrdos Monastery wines has been recognized international since through the years it has won prestigious awards. The monastery remains on the Provisional List for status as a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. We know good things to see in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
