Stolac and surroundings have been inhabited since ancient times due to the area's favorable natural environment. The rich grounds along with other natural benefits attracted prehistoric man, and later the Illyrians, Romans and Slavs, all of whom left a wealth of anthropological evidence. The area has been settled for at least 15,000 years. Last reviewed: 9 June 2024 Stolac descriptionStolac is located in Herzegovina-Neretva region of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (one of the two political entities that compose Bosnia and Herzegovina). The town was erected on the Bregava riverbanks and it is surrounded by mount Hrgud and the Vidovo field with neighbouring places rich in cultural history. Stolac is one of Herzegovina's oldest towns, has an Ottoman center (Carsija), a Roman castle, and craggy mountains surrounding the historical town. The western access into Stolac is the Dubravska plateau, particularly known for peach growing and, above all, Dubrave vineyards and the famous wines from Stolac. Illyrians and Greek sailors, Roman aristocrats, Gothic invaders, Slavic dignitaries, Ottoman nobles, Venetian soldiers, Austro-Hungarian governors, and many others have left their mark in this area. Stolac is the place with the longest and the richest history of urban life in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It belongs to a small group of places in the Balkans where material evidence of urban life have been preserved for over 3,500 years, dating back to the time of the last discovered remains of the Illyrian town, Daorson. Stolac is situated on the tourist route crossing Herzegovina and linking the Bosnian mountainous hinterland with the coastal regions of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dubrovnik and Montenegro. Containing, in one small area, unique cultural and aesthetic values, Stolac's historic core is an example of a complex cultural-historical and natural environmental ensemble. Nine historical layers compose Stolac's architectural ensemble: prehistory, Illyrian-Roman period, the early Middle Ages, advanced and late Middle Ages, Ottoman period, Austro-Hungarian period, and the time of the first and second Yugoslavia. A multitude of various influences on the architecture of town, lend it a complex image. Despite its unusual history and inclusion into four empires (Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and Austro-Hungarian), three kingdoms (Bosnian, Hungarian and Yugoslav), three world's monotheistic religions (Christianity (Orthodox Christianity and Catholicism), Islam, and Judaism)), the historical core of Stolac is still a coherent and harmonious cultural-historical monument with individual properties grown together into one ensemble. Only 3 km west of Stolac is located Radimlja necropolis area, one of the most valuable monuments of the medieval period in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The necropolis includes 133 tombstones, so called stećci. The core of the necropolis was built at the end of the 14th century, when three big chests were made, of which two are richly decorated.
