Šćit (Scit) description

If we keep in mind that the verb "rum" means to be tall, and the noun "ramah" means "high place", but also a sanctuary on a hill, it should come as no surprise that in the Old Testament there were so many Rama in Israel in which there was a time there were many shrines on the hills.

Rama in Bosnia is a region and a river. The river practically does not exist today because it submerged itself when it was surrounded by a dam for an artificial lake. It consisted of three springs: Rama, Buk and Krupić, and several smaller tributaries. The whole area was named after the river.

Rama became famous in history when the Hungarian kings put the name Rama ("rex Ramae") in their royal title in 1138. But it is much older as a settlement, although it is not known what it was called before. At the source of Rama, there has long been a human settlement known in archeology as Velika Gradina in Varvara.

The Romans left significant traces in Rama, especially the roads. Fragments of Roman tombstones from the time of Emperor Hadrian (117-138) were also excavated.

Christianity in the Ram area was very widespread even before the arrival of the Turks.

We cannot know anything reliably about the state of Christianity in Rama after the arrival of the Slavs in the 6th century and the demolition of the church in Varvara. It is certain that the barbarian church was not the only Christian center in Rama, so it is probable that Christians still lived in this area and were connected with the Salonitan episcopal successors in Split.

Unlikely that Christianity completely disappeared in Rama, and the mention of the "ancient church of St. Peter" in Rama speaks of a strong Christian tradition.

During the conquest of Bosnia in 1463, the Turks also conquered Rama, but the Hungarian king Matthias Corvinus gave it to Vladislav, son of Duke Stjepan, in December 1463, together with the town of Prozor and some other neighboring parishes as a sign of recognition for his participation in the fight against the Turks. around Jajce.

The former provincial, Fr. Antun Vladic, came to Rama as a parish priest in 1863. After he received a permission for the construction of the church, and begin work on its erection. The work was completed in 1881. The church is a three-nave basilica and the church in Italy, which Fr. Antun Vladic had the opportunity to see, was taking as a model.

Although both the original monastery and the church were dedicated to St. Peter the Apostle, later the miraculous image of Our Lady had a stronger place in worship, so the Assumption of Our Lady became the patron saint.

Lake is created with a construction of Rama dam in 1968 and leave monastery on the thin peninsula.

Franciscan monastery Rama-Šćit was many times destroyed and restored during its turbulent history. The whole complex has historical and cultural importance, and it has been proclaimed a national monument of Bosnia & Herzegovina.
