Mostar, beautiful and historical town, located only 60 km away from the Adriatic Sea, is the cultural, political and financial center of Bosnia-Herzegovina. Its diversity and architecture make it truly special. The Old Bridge, built by the Ottomans in the 16th century, is one of Bosnia-Herzegovina's most recognizable landmarks, and is considered one of the most exemplary pieces of Islamic architecture in the Balkans. Last reviewed: 11 May 2024 Mostar descriptionMostar, the chief city and historical capital of Herzegovina, was first mentioned in 1452. It became a Turkish garrison town in the 16th century, and in 1566, the Turks replaced the town's wooden suspension bridge over the Neretva river with a stone arch one, which gave the city its name (from Serbo-Croatian "most", "bridge"). This stone bridge was a masterpiece of Ottoman engineering, with a single arch 90 feet wide. During the Austro-Hungarian rule (1878-1918), Mostar became a center for Serbian scholars and poets, and for a strong nationalistic movement. The city served as a center for crafts and trade, and its reconstructed coppersmith's bazaar is a tourist attraction. Mostar University was founded in 1977, and the region is noted for its quality wines, tobacco, fruit, and vegetables. In November 1993, during the Bosnian civil war, the Old Bridge was destroyed by artillery fire from Bosnian Croat forces. A major rebuilding project was undertaken to restore the bridge and nearby buildings that had also been damaged; the bridge reopened in 2004. The bridge and the surrounding area were added to UNESCO's World Heritage list in 2005. Mostar has a long history of cultural and religious diversity, with mosques, churches, and synagogues existing side-by-side, indicating a shared life of Muslims, Christians, and Jews. It is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the country. The city's architecture presents a symbol of tolerance, with a unique blend of Ottoman, Mediterranean, and western European styles. Today, Mostar is a symbol of international cooperation and coexistence of diverse cultural, ethnic, and religious communities. The reconstructed Old Bridge and Old City of Mostar are a testament to the power of human solidarity and cooperation in the face of conflict. The city continues to be an important cultural and economic center in Bosnia-Herzegovina, with a rich history and a blend of Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, and Yugoslav influences. Mostar is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in history, culture, and architecture. The city's Old Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is an iconic symbol of Bosnia-Herzegovina. It is the most prominent the Ottoman Old Bridge, made of stone and dating back to the Middle Ages, over the river Neretva, the "Herzegovinian pearl". The Old Bridge is one of the country's most recognizable landmarks, and it is considered an exemplary piece of Balkan Islamic architecture. Visitors can walk across the bridge, explore the surrounding Old Town, and visit the Museum of the Old Bridge to learn more about its history and reconstruction. The city's historic center is filled with narrow streets, old Turkish houses, and a vibrant bazaar, offering a glimpse into Mostar's rich cultural heritage. Visitors can also explore the city's many mosques, churches, and synagogues, which testify to the city's long history of religious diversity and tolerance. The city has a lively atmosphere, with many cafes, restaurants, and shops, and is a great place to try local cuisine, including traditional dishes like čevapi and burek. Mostar is also a great base for exploring the surrounding region, which is known for its natural beauty, with mountains, rivers, and scenic villages. The area surrounding Mostar features a whole series of treasures of inestimable value as well. Just one hour drive or so, out of the city and you will discover villages and little towns which represent the history, culture and beauty of Bosnia-Herzegovina.
