The first fortifications of the medieval town Kljuc dates back to the 13th century. The first written mention of Kljuc is from 1322.

Ključ (Kljuc) description

The medieval town Kljuc consists of 3 parts: a) the Lubica Tower from the 13th century, b) the Ottoman tower camp, c) the medieval town on the Sana River (this is lower part of the town with capitula, palace, garden.

The history of Kljuc starts when the Romans here build a fort, which today cannot be determined more precisely when it was founded.

The Kljuc itself and the entire area around became important when the Ottomans invaded the center of the Bosnia kingdom. The last Bosnian king, Stjepan Tomasevic, tried to find refuge in Kljuc in 1463. Exactly here, under the ancient town Kljuc, the last fight between the Bosnian and Ottoman forces took a place. Bosnian forces lost, the king was was captured, and that mean the end of the independence of the medieval Bosnian state. The Ottomans took a control over Kljuc in 1463 and held it until 1878. Bosnia become part of the great Ottoman Empire.

On February 1, 1951, the medieval town Kljuc was placed under state protection.

Nowadays Kljuc is located within a pine forest that is preserved as a natural and healthy environment, with particular emphasis on protecting the environment of the Old Town. Today, in the area of ​​this ancient city, the citizens of Kljuc and tourists are finding a clean, beautiful and healthy natural environment and complete peace for rest and recreation.

Due to the historical and cultural significance of the Old Town, the municipality of Kljuc has undertaken a number of activities aimed at its conservation and protection. The Tabor Tower and the other, small tower in accordance with its appearance in the 15th century have been restored and renovated, and the access road to the city has been paved. Hiking trails have been made to enable safe and unimpeded movement throughout the Old Town complex.
