Bihać (Bihac) description

Bihac's history dates back to the medieval period, with the old town of Ostrovica being a significant medieval building located above the left bank of the Una river. The fortress was strategically placed, connecting the northern and southern parts of the Una valley, offering breathtaking views of Kulen Vakuf.

In 1262, Bihac was proclaimed as a royal free city and placed it under the direct authority of the Hungarian throne, with all rights and privileges pertaining thereto, which ensured its ability to develop completely independent from the political powers of local lords.

In the late 19th century, Bihac was a key location during the Austro-Hungarian annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The city was defended against Austro-Hungarian troops, but eventually surrendered in September 1878. This event had a significant impact on the defenders of other cities in the Bosnian Krajina, leading to their surrender.

During World War II, Bihac played a crucial role as the capital of the liberated territory. The first assembly of the AVNOJ (Anti-Fascist Council for the National Liberation of Yugoslavia) was held in Bihac in 1942, marking a significant milestone in the country's history.

In the 20th century, Bihac suffered during the Bosnian War, with many historical sites damaged or destroyed. However, efforts have been made to restore and preserve these sites, including the Turbe Stone, which was declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Today, Bihac is a city rich in history and culture, with many historical sites and landmarks waiting to be discovered. From medieval fortresses to Ottoman-era monuments, Bihac offers a unique glimpse into the region's complex past.

For those interested in history, Bihac offers a range of historical sites, including the Kapetanova kula, Historijske gradevine Konak, and Ripač - Arheološko područje. The city's memorial park, Garavice, is a poignant reminder of the region's turbulent past.

Whether you're interested in history, culture, or nature, Bihac has something for everyone. With its rich heritage and stunning natural beauty, Bihac is a must-visit destination in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
